Is Reformer Pilates Right for Me? (Honestly, I Wasn't Sure Either)

November 2024·7 min read

Honestly, it's the question I get asked more than any other. And I love it, because it means someone is curious enough to ask rather than just assume it's not for them.

So let me just answer it simply: yes, probably. But let me explain why.

I've never done Pilates before

That's fine. Most people who walk through the door at Reformer Pilates Algarve have never touched a Reformer in their life. The machine looks a bit intimidating the first time. It's got springs and a sliding carriage and straps and it's not immediately obvious what you're supposed to do with any of it. But that's what I'm here for. We start where you are, not where you think you should be.

Reformer Pilates is actually one of the most beginner friendly ways to start moving your body properly. Because the Reformer supports you while you work, you can do things in your first class that would take months to build up to on a mat. People are always surprised by that.

I'm not sure I'm fit enough

I hear this a lot, especially from people who've been a bit inactive, maybe after a move, a baby, an injury, or just life getting in the way. That's exactly who this is for. You don't need to be fit to start. You get fit by starting.

I keep classes small, a maximum of 8, so I can always keep an eye on you and everyone in the class. That's not something you get in a big studio.

I'm not sure I'm flexible enough

This one comes up all the time and it always makes me smile a little. Flexibility is not a requirement. It is a result. You do not need to be able to touch your toes to walk through the door. The Reformer works with your body as it is right now, and over time, the range of motion comes. I have seen it happen again and again. People who arrived stiff and guarded, and within a few months were moving in ways they genuinely didn't think were possible anymore. You start where you are. That is always enough.

I already know Reformer, I just moved to the Algarve

Welcome. This is something I hear a lot from people arriving into Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo, Loulé, Vilamoura and the wider Algarve area. They've been going to a studio in London, Sydney or Dubai and they arrive wondering where to go. I set up the first group Reformer Pilates classes in Portugal eight years ago, right here in Almancil. I hope we feel like the quality you left behind.

I'm only visiting the Algarve

Come anyway. A lot of clients are here for a week or two and fit in two or three classes while they're here. Some come back every year. A holiday is actually a brilliant time to try something new, and the Algarve has a way of making everything feel a bit more possible.

So, is Reformer Pilates right for you?

If you're curious, it probably is. I've taught pregnant women, people in their seventies, athletes, complete beginners, and people who just want to feel better in their body. The Reformer works for all of them.

If you're in or around Almancil, Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo, Loulé or anywhere in the Algarve and you've been thinking about giving it a try, just get in touch. I'd love to hear from you.

A maximum of 8, so I can always keep an eye on you and everyone in the class.

Visit our booking page to see the timetable and book your first class.

Can I do Reformer Pilates if I have back pain?

Yes, in most cases. Reformer Pilates is one of the most effective methods for reducing and managing back pain, because it addresses the underlying causes: poor core stability, restricted mobility, and muscular imbalances. Please mention any back issues when you book or arrive, so every exercise can be set up correctly for your body.

Is Reformer Pilates good for women over 50?

Absolutely. Reformer Pilates is one of the best forms of exercise for women over 50. It builds bone density, improves balance and coordination, maintains muscle mass, and keeps the joints mobile and healthy. The spring resistance means it is challenging without being high-impact, which makes it sustainable long-term. Many of the most committed clients at the studio are women in their 50s and 60s who have found that nothing else has given them the same results.

Is Reformer Pilates good for weight loss?

Reformer Pilates builds lean muscle, improves posture, and increases metabolic efficiency, which contributes to body composition changes over time. It is not a high-calorie-burn workout in the way that running or HIIT is, but many clients find that consistent Reformer training changes how their body looks and feels in ways that other forms of exercise did not achieve. The combination of strength, mobility, and body awareness tends to make people more active in general, which compounds the results.
