Pilates for golfers.

Rotation, stability, and a swing that lasts. Why golfers around Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo, and Vilamoura train on the Reformer.

Let me answer the question you actually came here with. Yes, Reformer Pilates helps your golf. Not in a vague, stretchy, wellness way. In a measurable one. Your swing leans on three physical things: rotation through the mid back, stability through the hips, and control through your centre. That is exactly what the Reformer trains, and it is why so many professional golfers use one. My studio is in Almancil, ten minutes from Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo, and golfers make up a huge part of who we teach. What follows is what I tell them, usually over a coffee after class.

A quick story first. When I opened the studio I expected the usual Pilates crowd. What I got, within a couple of years, was golfers. So many golfers. They arrive for the same reason almost every time: a back that has started to complain, or a swing that has lost ten yards and nobody can tell them why. They stay because the thing that was missing was never in the pro shop. It was in their body.

Your swing isn't the problem. Your body is.

You can take lessons until your pro retires on the proceeds. But if your mid back won't turn, your body borrows that rotation from somewhere else. Usually your lower back. Your lower back is terrible at rotation, and sooner or later it sends you the bill. That is the story behind most golf back pain I see, and behind a fair amount of lost distance too.

Coaches talk about the X factor, the separation between your shoulder turn and your hip turn. Before that is ever a technique question, it is a mobility question. And mobility is honest about age. From our forties onwards, rotation shrinks unless something maintains it. You feel it as a shorter backswing, a flatter drive, and a stiffer first tee. None of that is permanent. It is just untrained.

What the Reformer actually trains.

Playing well for another twenty years.

Most of the golfers I teach are not chasing tour distance. They want to keep playing. Comfortably, competitively, without paying for every round the next morning. The golfers who are still striking it well in their late seventies did not get lucky. They maintained the machine. That is the whole philosophy of my studio in one sentence.

How to start.

You don't need a golf specific programme to feel the difference. Every class trains rotation, stability, and control. Start with a Reformer & Tower or Open Reformer class. A single class is €30, booked online in a couple of minutes. If you would rather work one to one on your own swing, or you are managing a back, a private session is €80 and can be built entirely around golf. Plenty of our golfers book a duet with their regular playing partner, which is €100 for the two of you.

We are in Almancil. About ten minutes from Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo, fifteen from Vilamoura. Classes run in the morning, every day, so you are done long before your tee time.

The questions golfers ask me.

Does Reformer Pilates improve your golf swing?

Yes. A golf swing depends on rotation through the mid back, stable hips, and a core that transfers force. That is exactly what the Reformer trains. It won't fix your grip or your course management. It changes what your body can do when you swing.

Is Reformer Pilates good for golfers with back pain?

Very often, yes. Most golf back pain traces back to stiff hips and a stiff mid back forcing the lower back to rotate more than it is built for. The Reformer puts rotation back where it belongs and strengthens the muscles that protect your spine through thousands of swings. Tell us about your back before class and we will work with it.
