Is Reformer Pilates good for golfers?

Reformer Pilates can help you work on the mobility, strength and balance used in golf. Here is what it can offer, what it cannot promise, and how to start at our studio in Almancil, Algarve.

Yes. Pilates can be a useful part of a golfer’s conditioning: it trains controlled movement, balance and strength through a range of motion. The Reformer’s springs let an instructor adjust the support and resistance. It complements golf lessons and practice; it does not guarantee a longer drive or a lower handicap.

Can Pilates improve your golf swing?

Pilates can support the physical demands of your swing by working on trunk control, hip and shoulder movement, and balance. How that transfers to your game depends on your technique, starting point and wider training. Keep working with your golf coach on the swing itself.

Research is still limited. A small 2026 trial of 20 male golfers found improvements in carry distance and ball speed after four weeks of Pilates breathing training, but not in clubhead speed or lateral deviation compared with the control group. That was breathing training, not a standard Reformer class, so it cannot establish what results our classes will produce. Read the study summary at Korea University.

Is Reformer or mat Pilates better for golf?

Both can train movement control, strength and mobility. Mat Pilates uses your body weight and can be practised without a machine. The Reformer adds adjustable spring resistance and support. Choose the format that suits your needs and gives you good instruction, rather than assuming one will produce a better golf score.

Which Pilates exercises are useful for golfers?

Useful areas to work on include controlled trunk rotation, hip movement, shoulder control and balance. An instructor can choose exercises and resistance to match how you move. There is no single best exercise for every golfer, and copying a golf swing against heavy springs is not the starting point.

Balanced Body’s golf conditioning guidance discusses hip range of motion and control, including supported hip work and standing exercises. Learn unfamiliar Reformer exercises with an instructor before trying them independently.

How often should golfers do Pilates?

Start with a regular session you can fit around golf and recovery, then discuss frequency with your instructor. There is no established Pilates schedule that guarantees better golf performance. The right amount depends on your current activity, how demanding the sessions are and how you feel afterwards.

Is Pilates suitable for senior golfers and complete beginners?

You do not need Pilates experience or exceptional flexibility to begin. Exercises can be adapted to your starting point, with support and resistance adjusted as you learn. Tell the instructor about health conditions, injuries or recent surgery before booking so you can choose an appropriate starting session.

Can golfers with back pain do Pilates?

Some people with back pain find Pilates helpful, but suitability depends on the cause and symptoms. It is not a diagnosis or a cure. Ask a doctor or physiotherapist about persistent, new or worsening pain, and tell your instructor about any guidance you have been given before you start.

The NHS back-pain guidance explains when to seek medical advice. Avoid pushing through worsening pain. We can discuss a suitable class or private session, but Pilates does not replace medical care.

Should I do Pilates before a round of golf?

Treat a Pilates class as training, not as a substitute for your pre-round warm-up. When you are new to the Reformer, leave room to see how you feel afterwards before pairing it with a full round. Tell your instructor about your tee time and avoid making an unfamiliar, demanding session your match-day experiment.
