You can be a complete beginner and join a suitable group class. You can also have years of Pilates experience and choose a private session. Experience alone does not decide which format is right for you.
The main difference is how the instructor's time is shared. In a small group, you work through a class alongside other people. In a private session, the appointment is dedicated to you. Both use instruction and practice; the amount of individual time is different.
What a small group class gives you
A group class offers a planned session, other people to practise alongside and a regular place in your week. You follow the instructor's guidance while working on your own Reformer. You can ask questions and receive corrections, but the instructor is also looking after the rest of the group.
This can suit you if you like having a set class to attend and feel comfortable learning alongside others. There is no requirement to arrive already knowing the spring settings or the exercise names.
At Reformer Pilates Algarve, Reformer & Tower and Open Reformer welcome beginners. Dynamic Reformer has a faster pace and is intended for clients who already know the basics. Start with the class description, rather than picking whichever name sounds most challenging.
When a private session may suit you
A private session gives you more room to pause, repeat a movement and explain what you find difficult. The instructor can spend the appointment on your pace and priorities without having to keep a group moving together.
You might prefer this if the equipment makes you nervous, you have lots of questions, or you want to spend more time understanding a particular movement. It can also suit an experienced client who wants individual feedback.
Our private sessions are 50 minutes. Use the booking page to check the current appointment options, instructor, price and availability before choosing. You do not have to commit to ongoing private sessions to decide whether the format suits you.
If you have an injury or health concern
Tell the studio before you book so we can discuss whether the available session is suitable. A private appointment allows a more individual pace, but that alone does not make it appropriate for every condition.
Pilates instruction is not a diagnosis or a replacement for medical care. If you have an injury, symptoms or uncertainty about exercising, get advice from a healthcare professional. The NHS beginner Pilates guidance also advises checking suitability when you have health concerns. Share any relevant advice or restrictions with the instructor.
Compare the practical details
For group classes, a single session is €30. Four classes cost €112 and eight cost €208, with 90-day validity for either pack. A single class has a 14-day expiry. You can find the current group prices here.
For a private appointment, compare the available times and current price on the booking page. Think about travel time as well as the session itself. A format that works beautifully in theory may be difficult to sustain if you cannot comfortably get to it.
If you are staying with family or visiting the Algarve with friends, a private group booking is a separate option: your own group attends together. That is different from an individual appointment or joining the regular timetable.
You can use both formats
You could start privately to become familiar with the equipment, then join an appropriate group class. Or you could attend groups and arrange a private session when you want more individual attention. There is no fixed sequence you must complete.
If you are undecided, tell us three things: whether you have used a Reformer before, what you would like help with, and when you can attend. We can then help you choose from the sessions available.
Read the first-visit guide for what to expect at the studio, or contact us with your questions. Choosing a first session can be a straightforward conversation.
